Tournament Team
Update April 3
Things are getting rolling for the Aces and Dynamite teams. Thanks to all parents who attended the meeting on Sunday. We are currently putting together all of the uniform and warm-up jacket pricing and should have these to you very soon.
We are also implementing a team-only website. There you can keep track of all practices, tournaments and team updates. Team members will be receiving an email with your own login and password so watch for that soon. This will be our main means of getting you information regarding the team.
You can find the website at www.eteamz.com/driftwoodmartialarts
Update March 28
Due to a last minute scheduling conflict, the team/parent meeting on March 30 has been moved to Sunday, April 1 @ 1pm. The practice will still run on March 30th as planned. This only affects the meeting. If you are unable to attend for any reason, please let a coach know.
IMPORTATNT! Please return registration forms and fees before March 30. The coaching team needs to know final numbers before proceeding with practice preparations.
Team Tryouts
In 2011 we stormed the tournament circuit and brought home 198 awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd (plus many more for 4th and 5th place - just sayin’!). In 2012 we plan to continue our DOMINATION and we want you to join in the fun. If you are interested in trying out, put your name on the sign-up sheet in the lobby and a member of the team will contact you with tryout details.
FAQ
Why should students compete?
Competition is a lot of fun but it is also a valuable training tool. Students quickly identify strength and weaknesses and the training becomes more focused. Competiton teaches how to win gracefully and learn from losses. Tournaments are the equivalent of a hockey game or dance recital. Without competition, training is all practice with no game.
What age can a student begin competing?
Most tournaments have divisions for ages 6 and up.
What belt can a student begin competing?
White belt. Competitors are divided by age and experience.
Does a student need any competition experience?
Nope! We’ll teach you everything you need to know to compete successfully.
How does a student tryout for the team?
Sign up on the sheet and a coach will contact you about the tryout process. Participation in the Ontario Karate Challenge on February 18th is part of the tryout process.
What is the comittment required?
Students:
- Attend 75% of practices from March to November.
- Compete in 6-9 Tournament depending on the team level you are assigned.
- Participate in fundraising events.
- Be prepared to bring your child to practices.
- Support the team by attending tournaments and fundraising events.
What costs are involved?
Team dues: $112.50 • Tournament Entry Fees (approx $50/event) • Travel Costs
Do I need to purchase any additional equipment?
A custom tournament team uniform is required. Competiton grade weapons are recommended but not mandatory. A team warm-up jacket is recommended. If you do not have a Driftwood Martial Arts t-shirt you will need one.
