Martial Arts are an increasingly popular activity for children.
For the uninformed, images of high-action, aggressive karate movies may come to mind. However, martial arts are very different than that and the benefits for children are many.
Participants develop self-confidence while learning self-defense, self-discipline and self-control, all in a safe, fun environment. As well, they get an excellent physical workout. Martial ats also teach how to set goals and achieve goals.
Martial arts classes are ideal for any child. Whether outgoing or introverted, co-ordinated or not, a martial arts class will bring out the best in each child, teaching not only physical skills but also manners, respect and discipline. Although most classes are done in groups, the focus is on the individuals success.
Many martial arts facilities help children learn non-violent ways to deal with bully situations.
"We give kids the skills, knowledge and, ultimately the confidence they need to stand up to bullies," explains Sensei Adette Rice, owner of Driftwood Martial Arts.
"Our classes are great for those kids who tend to be bullies too. Most bullying begins with low self-esteem and low self-respect."
"Through our three principals of compassion, gratitude and respect, we are able to bring the child out of that low self-esteem rut and impress upon the student the importance of peaceful resolution."
